Irish Brown Soda Bread

by IrishGirl on February 10, 2009

Whether you eat it for breakfast with some raisins added to it or use it as is to accompany your Irish Stew, this traditional Irish Brown Bread recipe is fantastic.

4 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup bread flour
1/3 cup rolled oats
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 cup raisins (optional)

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Lightly grease two baking sheets. Stir together both flours, rolled oats, baking soda and salt. Slowly mix in the buttermilk until a soft dough is formed. Knead lightly. Divide dough into 4 sections and form them into loaves. Mark the top of each loaf with an ‘X’ or ‘T’ and place them on the baking sheets. Bake until golden brown for approximately 35 minutes (begin checking at 30).
